BJP continues to disown Mittal
Continuing to distance itself from Sudhanshu Mittal, whose premises were raided by IT sleuths in the wake of alleged financial irregularities in Commonwealth Games (CWG), the BJP on Thursday said Mr Mittal was only “associated” with the party.
Mr Mittal was a close confidante of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan and was a former in charge of the BJP’s Assam unit.
When asked why the party was not coming out in support of Mr Mittal, who had alleged that he was victim of “political witchhunting”, BJP national spokesperson Ramnath Kovind said “party chief Nitin Gadkari had already clarified its stand on this issue”.
He, however, clarified that BJP was not associated with Mr Mittal’s business activities. Refraining from making any comment on this issue or on Mr Mittal, Mr Gadkari had said that whoever found guilty should be punished. The BJP also refrained from making any comment on whether Mr Mittal was a party leader or not.
“He only has primary membership of the party,” Mr Kovind replied. However, the party maintained that the CWG scam issue would be taken up “aggressively” in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.
A day after his premises were raided by IT officers, Mr Mittal had on Wednesday claimed that some senior BJP leaders had called him when the news of IT raids broke out and had alleged that he was being made a “political scapegoat.”
