BJP chief’s Modi praise upsets section
BJP chief Rajnath Singh’s comments praising Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in the US and raising his visa issue, has upset a section of senior party leaders.
This section is of the view that when the issue of party’s prime ministerial candidate is yet to be decided by the parliamentary board, Mr Singh’s comments were seen as “virtually” nominating Mr Modi for the post. They also felt that Mr Singh’s comments for Mr Modi were “unwarranted” and contribution of other leaders, including party veteran L.K. Advani, to the party’s growth was overlooked. Some leaders are also upset that when Mr Modi had never applied for the US visa, what was the need to raise the issue. Mr Modi is considered as the top runner for the PM candidate post however, some of the senior leaders including Mr Advani, Sushma Swaraj and M.M. Joshi are reportedly unhappy with his elevation in the party.
The BJP chief, while addressing a function in the US, had called Mr Modi as the only leader with “national appeal” and had said that he would raise the issue of denial of US visa to Mr Modi during his meetings with legislators in the US.
