BJP for CBI probe into rape charge on Rajasthan mantri
The police has intensified its probe against former minister Babulal Nagar over the charge of rape against him while the governor has accepted his resignation. Mr Nagar’s family members came out in his support and said he was innocent. The victim’s statement will be recorded under CrPC Section 164 on Saturday. The Opposition BJP, meanwhile, sharpened its knives against the Congress government and sought a CBI probe against Mr Nagar.
The concerned court has set September 21 for recording of the victim’s statement under CrPC Sec. 164.
The CID crime branch of the police took the victim to SMS Medical College hospital on Thursday and a team of doctors conducted a medical examination on her. Forensic experts also examined the place of alleged crime and material in form of evidence. The police lodged an FIR against Mr Nagar when a local court ordered a probe against him. The victim said she was under threat but would stand firm in her fight to get justice.
A cornered Nagar had resigned from his post on Thursday, saying he was quitting on moral grounds. He said his resignation was aimed at paving the way for free and fair investigation. “I am innocent and have been framed in the case by my political adversaries. It is a bid to prevent me from contesting elections due by the year end,” said Mr Nagar. The victim alleged she was sexually assaulted by Mr Nagar on September 11 at his official residence in Jaipur.
Nagar’s wife Sushila Nagar, his son Ravi and other family members came out in his defence. “It is a total lie, we were present at the residence along with a large number of people at 5 pm, which is when she claims the incident occurred, so how could it be possible,” said Mrs Nagar. The former minister attempted to tell mediapersons at his residence, with the help of his family members, that the incident narrated by the alleged victim was a lie.
The former minister said he won three successive Assembly elections and his opponents had designed the fake incident to tarnish his image and ruin his political career. The victim, however, said Mr Nagar called her to his residence on September 11 and assaulted her.
The Opposition BJP said the probe by the CID CB was just an eyewash and demanded a probe by a SIT or the CBI. Women’s groups campaigned for Mr Nagar’s immediate arrest. “We seek his arrest and security of the victim,” said Kavita Srivastava, a social activist.
