BJP allies criticise flag-hoisting plan
It’s not just the Opposition parties which are criticising the BJP for its plan to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Republic Day, even its own alliance partners and a section of its own leaders are criticising the saffron party for its proposed plan. Sources said a section of BJP leaders are of the view that this move will
dent its effort to launch a crusade against Centre on the corruption issue as well as give ammunition to Opposition to use against it. Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has already cautioned BJP to be prepared for the consequences if it hoist the flag in Lal Chowk.
The JD(U), which is BJP’s oldest NDA ally, is of the view that this move (to hoist the tricolour at Lal Chowk) will only disrupt the peace in the region. Instead of “promoting national solidarity and sovereignty” as claimed by the BJP, this move will only end up aggravating tension in the region, the JD(U) is of the view.
The JD(U) has also appealed to its alliance partner that it should postpone its Republic Day programme in Srinangar. The issue was also discussed during the NDA meeting on Thursday.
“There is peace in the Valley right now. It is because of the efforts of the locals. Steps should be taken at this time to strengthen that peace instead of doing anything which hampers it,” JD(U) chief and NDA convenor, Sharad Yadav said. Trying to steer clear of its alliance partner’s plan, Mr Yadav added that it is “BJP’s rally” and NDA is not involved.
