Bihar’s economy grew at 14.8% in 2011-12: Modi
The Bihar government’s economic survey report for 2011-12 on Wednesday claimed that the state’s economy grew at 14.8 per cent in 2010-11 compared to the same in 2009-10 and that the annual growth rate from 2004-05 to 2010-11 stood at 11.36 per cent.
The survey report, tabled in the state Assembly by deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who also holds the finance portfolio, gave the ruling JD(U) and BJP leaders another reason for pride. Describing the growth trend as a record and a positive sign, a beaming Mr Modi said the growth figures gave the government satisfaction about Bihar’s uninterrupted forward movement.
“This record economic growth is proof that good governance and forward-looking policy can transform a stagnant economy. Substantial increases in public investment have made this possible,” said Mr Modi. The economic growth was accompanied by major improvements in the social sector, he claimed.
Mr Modi said there were 36 largescale units in the state, besides six such units under the central sector. A total of 1.89 lakh medium, small and micro-registered units were set up till December 2011, indicating an overall increase of around 60 per cent over the year 2000 and the highest increase of about 62 per cent in tiny micro sector followed by 58 per cent in artisan-based units.
Speaking of investments in Bihar, Mr Modi said 603 project proposals involving a total investment of over `48,000 crores and employment of 1.85 lakh people had been cleared by the State Investment Promotion Board so far.
