Beni fires a broadside at SP, again
Union minister for steel Beni Prasad Verma on Saturday demanded that the serial blasts in the UP courts be probed by the National Investigation Agency. Talking to a select group of reporters here, Mr Verma said the nexus between the Samajwadi Party and the BJP ran deep and a CBI probe into the firing on “karsevaks” in Ayodhya during the temple movement would reveal this.
He also challenged Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav to an open debate with him on the demolition of the Babri Masjid and other events prior to this. He added that the SP and BJP were preparing to fuel communal passions so that they could ensure polarisation of votes on religious lines. Replying to a question, Mr Verma denied that he had been served any “gag order” by the Congress. “Mrs Sonia Gandhi and Mr Rahul Gandhi have faith in me and I have full faith in them. Every citizen enjoys freedom of expression and so do I,” he said. Talking about the serial court blasts, Mr Verma said that a judicial probe had confirmed that those arrested in connection with serial blasts were innocent. “One of them, Khalid Mujahid, has died, and I have information that he was poisoned to death. If others like him are innocent, then who exactly carried out the blasts in the courts,” Mr Verma asked. He said the state government should itself recommend a probe by the NIA into the blasts.
