Bengaluru: Escaped serial rapist and psychopath, M. Shankar, alias Jaishankar  was cau­ght by the police five days after he scaled the 30 ft high walls of the Parappana Agrahara central prison to make his getaway.
The 36-year-old, wanted in 26 cases of rape and murder across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, was smoked out into the open by the police, using a decoy who promised to find him a bike to make his escape and was caught when he arrived near Kudlu Gate on Hosur Road, according to city police commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar.
Jaishankar, who was lod­ged in the hospital ward of the prison, used a duplicate key to get out and scaled the walls with the help of a bamboo pole that he used for balancing and a bedsheet that he spread across the glass pieces embe­dded on compound wal­ls.

Serial rapist and killer Jaishankar would have been still at large if he had not called his old fellow inmate at the Parappana Agrahara central prison.
He contacted him over phone seeking his help, but it provided the police a hint to where he was hiding. A senior police officer said that the police had listed and intercepted the numbers of a few people, who were close to Jaishankar.
“Surprisingly, he did not contact anyone for five days. Our wait ended on Friday morning, when he contacted his friend, who was his fellow inmate sometime back, seeking his help to get out of the city. Even that number was tapped and Jaishankar asked him to arrange a bike and told him to come near a water tank behind Sadguru Sainath School at Kudlu, about two kilometres away from the prison,” the office said.
“When interrogated, he said that he managed to stay at isolated sheds near Kudlu all these days. He contacted his friend by borrowing a phone from a stranger,
claiming that he was a driver and had sustained injuries in an accident, and wanted to contact his family members,” the officer said.“When grilled about why he escaped, he said that he was afraid that he would be given capital punishment in some cases pending against him and thus escaped, hoping
to settle in some other state,” the officer added.

Bengaluru: Jaishankar who was lodged in the hospital ward of the prison used a duplicate key to get out. How he managed to get the key is still not clear and is being investigated.
Emerging from the ward, he tried to climb the cellar wall, but failed. He then used the grilled gate to climb on to the wall around the hospital ward to  reach the 20 ft wall separating the men’s and women’s prisons.
The wall, which is 1.5 feet wide and 100 meters long, is protected by an electric fence running all along it and leads to a smaller connecting wall, about 12 feet long and 1.5 feet wide,  running perpendicular to the middle of the main 30 ft tall outer compound wall.
The smaller connecting wall is protected by  broken pieces of glass strewn  on its top instead of an electric fence. 
Once atop the first wall, Jaishankar  made his way easily to the connecting wall, since the power to the electric fence had been switched off. But he injured his feet while crossing the connecting wall to reach the outer compound wall, leaving blood stains on them and the ground below.  The convict  carried  a bamboo pole for balancing on the walls and a bedsheet to spread across the glass pieces. Reaching the outer compound wall, he took a thick  belt from a duffel bag, and tying it to the bottom of the electric fence,  jumped 30 feet down to the ground. It took him about an hour to make his escape.
“He claims to have planned his escape a long time ago and says he was preparing for it for the last two months,” said Joint Commissioner of Police,  B K Singh.
Additional Director General of Police (Prisons), K V Gangandeep, confirmed that the electric fence did not function although there was no disruption in power supply at the time.
An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) , in-charge of keeping the electric fence in working condition, has been suspended.

Serial rapist and psychopath , M Shankar, also known as Jaishankar  who escaped from the Parappana Agrahara central prison by scaling its 30-foot wall fitted with an electric fence about a week ago, was caught by the police near Kudlu,  a short distance from the prison.
The 36-year-old, wanted in 26 cases of rape and murder across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, was trapped on Hosur Road near Electronic City, six days after his daring escape. He was found taking shelter in a dilapidated hut besides a lake near Kudlu Gate, city police commissioner, Raghavendra H Auradkar said. Jaishankar’s escape from  prison around midnight Sunday last had revealed a shocking lapse of security in state prisons.
Auradkar said a team of police officers assigned to the job relied on informants, contacts and analysed the rapist’s psychological profile, taking tips from the jail staff about his behaviour and their own expertise to pin down Jaishankar.
One informant was sent as decoy to the escaped convict to draw him to a particular spot so he could be nabbed. The informant promised to give Jaishankar a bike for his escape if he came to Kudlu, and he was caught when he did, the commissioner said.
“The convict had injuries on the soles of his feet and on his hands. The ankles of both his legs were swollen. He also complained of severe back ache. The case is under investigation and details about the people he approached and the places he visited after his escape are still being put together,” Auradkar added.
Jaishankar will be produced before the concerned court and taken into police custody for further interrogation. A case has been registered under section 224 of the IPC by the Parappana Agrahara police.
