Bangaru’s trial to go on, says HC
There was no relief for former disgraced Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Bangaru Laxman, who was allegedly caught accepting money in a sting operation conducted by Tehelka web portal in 2001, as the Delhi high court on Monday dismissed the leader’s petition and refused to quash the criminal proceedings registered against him.
After hearing a brief argument from the CBI and the counsel of Mr Laxman, Justice Shiv Narayan Dhingra refused to interfere in the ongoing proceedings of a trial court against the accused, Mr Laxman. In 2000-01, a news portal, Tehelka.com, conducted a secret operation for exposing corruption in defence procurements, in which Mr Laxman was allegedly caught accepting `1 lakh.

SC upholds death for 3 AIADMK men
New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the death sentence awarded to three AIADMK workers for burning to death three hapless college girls at Dharampuri district in 2000 following the conviction for former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa in a corruption case.
A bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and B.S. Chauhan rejected the plea of the convicts for a lenient view and said their gruesome offence fell under the category of “rarest of rare offence” warranting death penalty for C. Muniappan, Ravindran and Nedunchezhian.
“The ‘rarest of the rare case’ comes when a convict would be a menace and threat to the harmonious and peaceful co-existence of the society. Where an accused does not act on any spur-of-the-moment provocation and he indulges himself in a deliberately planned crime and meticulously executes it, the death sentence may be the most appropriate punishment for such a ghastly crime.”
