‘Balwa went abroad without court nod’
The CBI on Monday told a special court here that it has information that Shahid Balwa, facing trial in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case, travelled abroad without taking the court’s permission which was set as a condition when he was granted bail.
Opposing Balwa’s plea seeking exemption from personal appearance for five days during the day-to-day trial in the multi-crore scam case, CBI prosecutor K.K. Goel said the agency has got some information “otherwise” about Balwa.
The agency made this statement in the court when Balwa’s counsel Vijay Aggarwal moved an application seeking exemption from personal appearance from September 2 to September 6 on grounds of “emergency”.
“I am opposing it (application). This should not be out and out. He (Balwa) should honour the court. We have heard otherwise so I am opposing it,” Mr Goel told special Central Bureau of Investigation judge O.P. Saini, adding that sanction for exemption should not be taken as “deemed”. The prosecutor initially argued that he does not want to “divulge” the information but later on he said the CBI has got information that Balwa has travelled abroad.
