Balwa used DoT leaks to seal 2G deals
New Delhi, Feb. 14: Thanks to information allegedly leaked by officials of the department of telecom, Mr Shahid Balwa’s Swan Telecom and Unitech Wireless Private Limited were able to apply for Unified Access Service (UAS) and 2G Spectrum licences in a matter of minutes, the on-going CBI probe into the 2G spectrum scam has found.
Both the telecom companies were later awarded licences worth over `3,200 crore.
Swan Telecom (now Etisalat-DB Telecom Private Limited) was able to submit its application for UAS and for 2G spectrum for 10 circles in just 15 minutes, at an average of a minute-and-a-half to submit each application.
Unitech Wireless Private Limited was equally effective: It submitted documents related to UAS and 2G spectrum licences for 13 circles within seven minutes, the investigation has revealed.
“The Central Bureau of Investigation is already probing the reasons for the issuance of two press releases on January 10, 2008, and grant of 45 minutes to the applicants to collect the Letter of Intents (LoIs) by the DoT,” sources said.
