Baalu meets Raja in Tihar
In an apparent bid to provide solace to the jailed DMK leader and former telecom minister A. Raja, senior party leader T.R. Baalu and minister of state for social justice and empowerment Napoleon called on him in Tihar Jail.
Mr Napoleon called on Mr Raja on Monday morning and Mr Baalu in the evening, in the highly-guarded prison. The meeting was kept a secret until it was over. Even though no official word was made available after the meeting, it is assumed the DMK leaders met Mr Raja to assure him that the party was still with him and that he should be bold and not get de-moralised.
The meeting is clearly a sign of the DMK ready to go to any extent to back him irrespective of the prospective political fall-out arising out of such a stand.
Mr Raja, who was arrested by the CBI in the 2G spectrum scam, was on February 17 remanded to judicial custody till March 3. He had earlier resigned as the Union telecom minister for his alleged role in the sale of 2G-spectrum waves.
Mr Baalu and Mr Napoleon meeting Mr Raja is significant in the light of the fact that the party’s office-bearers or any of his erstwhile Cabinet colleagues have not called on him till now, even though the party had said that it would stand by him in his hour of trial. DMK general council on February 3 rejected his resignation stating that mere arrest cannot be taken for guilt and that he is innocent till found guilty by a court of law.
