Axe on pollutant units
Hyderabad: APPCB Task Force, on Friday reportedly directed immediate closure of about 25 polluting units operating within 10km radius of Osmansagar (Gandipet) and Himayats-agar lakes, the main source of drinking water to the city for not shifting despite repeated notices.
APPCB Task Force reportedly decided to cut off the power of these polluting industries as per the provisions.
Leading vaccination companies including the government-owned Indian Immunologicals Limited and others having a foreign partnership in addition to some other government undertakings are amongf:\page3 a total of 55 shortlisted units which are in the process of shifting, have been given some grace period, sources say.
Apex Court in December 2000, had directed that no polluting industries shall be located within 10km radius of both the water bodies and the existing ones had to be shifted.
APPCB swung into action after the recent rebuke by Justice B. Subhashan Reddy, Lokayukta of AP who sought a report from AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd by January 29, 2013 on the case and status of shifting of the units.
Polluting industries in 84 villages located upstream along these lakes and industries causing acidification in downstream villages had to be shifted but a significant chunk of these continued to operate illegally in gross violation of norms despite repeated notices and orders from the concerned departments amidst alleged political patronage.
