Assam TV channel editor resigns
The molestation case of a teenage girl took a new turn on Tuesday with Atnu Bhuyan, editor-in-chief of News Live — the channel that filmed the incident of molestation — resigned on Tuesday.
Defending his cameraman for filming the horrific incident, Mr Bhuyan told reporters, “I am resigning as I think there will not be fair investigations into the matter.”
Referring to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s remark on Monday that the reporter of the news channel should have informed the police, he said, “Chief minister has already pronounced the judgment by accusing my reporter for not informing the police. I have information that now my management will be pressurised to take action against me.”
He pointed out that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of state health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is the chief managing director of News Live channel. “I feel that chief minister may mount pressure on my management to expel me so I have decided to quit. I have come to know now from various sources that the chief minister had wished that I should resign,” Mr Bhuyan claimed.
Meanwhile, a three-member team of senior editors will visit Guwahati to look into the allegations about the role of mediapersons in the coverage of the molestation case that happened there last week.
The Broadcast Editors’ Association(BEA) said in a statement here that its team will try to find out if any journalist had actually played a part in the commissioning of the crime.
