Assam Cong leader arrested for rape
While the nation continues to mourn the death of the Delhi gangrape victim and calling for stringent anti-rape laws, a prominent Congress leader in Assam has been accused of raping a woman in her house at Salabari in Chirang district of Bodoland Territorial Council on Wednesday night.
Congress leader Bikramsingh Brahma, who is also the chief coordinator of the ruling party in the Bodoland Territorial Council area, was caught and beaten up by angry villagers soon after the victim, who is a mother of two, raised an alarm. Mr Brahma, who is known to be an influential politician of the ruling party in the BTC, entered the house of the victim forcibly. The villagers and women folks of Salbari, who gathered in large number, thrashed the politician and smashed his vehicle before handing him over to the police.
The Congress leader, who was slapped and stripped by angry women, also confessed before the villagers of raping the woman.
Mr Brahma also tried to escape but the villagers did not let it happen and informed the police.
The inspector general of police in BTC, Mr G.P. Singh, told this newspaper, “Prima facie, there is a case of sexual assault by Brahma. We have already arrested him and an FIR has been registered.” He said that the police has already started the investigation.
The police, which has sent the victim and the accused for medical examination, however, said that Brahma might have been sexually abusing the woman for past several months in lieu of making her a beneficiary of government schemes. “After he forcibly entered her house last night, she raised an alarm and the villagers caught him and handed him over to police after beating him up,” the police said.
