Arrested accused admits his role
The police claimed to have made a breakthrough in the Shakti Mill gangrape case by arresting one of the five accused that raped the 22-year-old photojournalist on Thursday.
As many as 20 teams were formed that led to the arrest of one alleged rapist within 16 hours of the incident. Four other accused are still absconding. The arrested accused has admitted to his role in the crime.
Sources said that the arrested accused has been identified as Chand Abdul Sattar Shaikh, who is in his 20s and lives in the Dhobi Ghat area of Mahalaxmi. During interrogation, Shaikh gave the names of the other accused as Mohammed Kasam Bangali, Salim (full name not known), Vijay Mohan Jadhav alias Nanu and Ashfaq alias Baba. The police has learnt that all of them live in the Dhobi Ghat area and sell stolen scrap, petrol and gathered at the deserted Shakti Mill compound in the evening to split the day’s earnings. A few of them are already booked for different property offences at Mumbai Central Government Railway police station, Nagpada, Agripada and N.M. Joshi Marg police station.
Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh on Friday said, “The victim is composed and stable now. Twenty teams, including officials from the crime branch and local police, have been formed to trace the absconding four accused.” He added that sketches of the accused had been prepared on the basis of the description given by the victim and her colleague.
