Army Chief for system of accrediting defence scribes
Army Chief Gen. V.K. Singh on Tuesday suggested a system of accrediting experienced defence journalists with the armed forces to boost understanding between the military and the media. He was speaking at a seminar on “Media-military synergy” in the capital on Tuesday.
The Army chief also maintained that “the military should take formal steps to acknowledge the respective roles of the media and the military by establishing formalised accreditation and training processes not only for functioning within the country but also to enable media to accompany Indian forces overseas, including the United Nations, as is customary with other armies world over.”
Army sources, however, later said this suggestion should not be confused with the practice of “embedded journalism” that is practiced in some of the western nations.
The Army chief also said that the media was engaged in projecting the news in the best manner possible while the military’s aim was to complete their operations in a time-bound manner and maintain secrecy. He said that due to this, “there will always be a certain amount of friction” between the military and the media.
