Army Chief in Leh, Siachen trek cancelled
Army Chief Gen. V.K. Singh visited Leh on Monday in the wake of the massive tragedy caused by the recent cloudburst there, even as India cancelled the annual civilian trek to Siachen glacier (to have taken place later this year) on account of the tragedy, Army sources confirmed on Monday.
After visiting Leh, Gen. Singh is also expected to visit Srinagar. Apart from the death of several civilians, the Army had also lost some of its personnel on account of the natural disaster at Leh.
A detailed assessment of any damage caused to Army posts near both the Line of Control and the Line of Actual Control is likely to be made during the visit. Gen. Singh’s visit to Srinagar will also be significant, given the current spate of violence that has hit the Kashmir valley. The Army is currently carrying out counter-insurgency operations in the Kashmir valley besides guarding the LoC. But if the violence in the valley intensifies, the Army could be expected to bring the situation under control.
That situation, however, has not yet arisen.
