AP High Court faults RTC ban on women jobs
Hyderabad: Justice B. Chandra Kumar of the AP High Court has found fault with the AP Road Transport Corporation for exempting women from applying for the posts of shramiks, mechanics and chargeman. Such exclusion violates Article 16 of the Constitution.
The judge was hearing a plea by G. Anita Rani and K. Sulochana that the action of the corporation in not receiving and processing their applications was illegal.
The Corporation contended that it has never recruited women for the post as the job of shramik and mechanic involve heavy and strenuous duties and as such it had sought exemption from the government for recruiting women to these posts and the government had accorded the exemption.
After perusing the records, the judge made it clear that the government had exempted APSRTC in certain special circumstances from filling up backlog posts with women, but such exemption cannot be used for subsequent recruitments.
He said, “There is no whisper in the said letter that the APSRTC has been permanently exempted from recruiting women candidates for the posts of shramiks.”
The court directed RTC to allow recruitment of women within four weeks.
