Anna Hazare has sufficient support, assures Hegde
Contradicting media reports, former Supreme Court judge and Lokayukta Santosh Hegde said there is immense support for Anna Hazare’s fight against corruption, and added that the core committee would meet soon to discuss threadbare the Lokpal Act after Anna’s health improves.
He was responding to queries on the sidelines of a meeting organised by India against corruption (IAC), Coimbatore chapter, in connection with the proposed Lokpal bill. Brushing aside rumours of conflict among Team Anna members, he said some had walked out due to misunderstanding.
He said he had chosen only a limited role in it. There is no second opinion about public support to Anna’s movement against corruption, he asserted. Mr Hegde said more IAC chapters were being opened to bring in more people into the fold.
Asked whether all states would come forward to set up Lokayukta, he said no government would say ‘no’ to Lokayukta since none of the governments can claim that it is clean. Hence, they would agree ‘in principle’ to Lokayukta.
On the proposed Lokpal bill to be passed in Parliament, he said even though it is strong, one has to wait and watch its implementation. Certainly, the bill needs amendments to make it strong, he opined.
