Anna Hazare in Delhi to meet parliamentary body on Lokpal

Prominent social activist Anna Hazare has arrived in the national capital with his key supporters to meet the parliamentary standing committee on the Lokpal Bill.

Briefing media ahead of the meeting, Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal said they would be meeting first at the residence of eminent lawyer Shanti Bhushan on Wednesday afternoon to chalk out their strategy for the proposed indefinite fast from August 16 as also what they would discuss with the parliamentary standing committee.

Kejriwal said that Wednesday's meeting with the parliamentary standing committee on Lokpal was a mere formality, and added that he did not expect anything positive to come out of it.

He also questioned the Delhi police for approaching the Hazare team to limit the period of their proposed fast to three days only. He said that nowhere in the Constitution was there a clause to limit how long an individual or a group could protest or go on strike in seeking to have its demands from the government met.

He also said that the Hazare team has repeatedly and consistently asked the concerned authorities to designate a central place in Delhi or on its immediate outskirts where they could hold their protest and fast peacefully. This demand, he said, is yet to be complied with.

He said that as things stand, Hazare and his supporters would be going ahead with their indefinite fast as planned from August 16.
