Andhra Pradesh Congress to bank on SC, BC in polls
Hyderabad: The Congress is working out a strategy for the 2014 General Elections by making use of the SC and BC cards. These communities are major vote banks.
The SC, ST sub plan has got a good response from these communities according to feedback got by the state government. The Congress in-house agency had recently conducted a survey on the response from people, and in particular from SCs on the SC, ST sub-plan.
According to this report, the Congress’ position had improved with five to seven per cent more votes over the previous elections. After this report, the Chief Minister has decided to extensively campaign at the village level to woo the SC community.
On the lines of the SC, ST sub plan, the Chief Minister has decided to bring about a BC sub plan too. He has been announcing this at every public meeting held in the last few days.
In general, the BC community traditionally supports the Telugu Desam while the SCs and STs are with the Congress.
These sections seem to have shifted their loyalties to the YSR Congress after Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy formed it as they have gratitude towards the late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.
To bring these communities back to the party, the Congress leadership is trying various strategies, a Congress leader said. Since the SC, ST sub plan has yielded results, the party leaders opined that by bringing about a BC sub plan, some more voters could turn favourable to the Congress.
If the Congress gameplan to get the support of these communities succeeds, the party leaders are hoping to improve their tally when the General Elections are held in 2014.
