Andhra MP pitches for Telangana state

Ponnam Prabhakar, an MP from Andhra Pradesh, on Monday, made a pitch for a separate state of Telangana.
Participating in the discussion on the economic resolution, during the 83rd plenary, Mr Prabhakar reminded the party of its December 9 announcement. Batting for a

separate state, the MP said, “The youth and the people of Telangana are waiting for a decision on the Telangana issue. The sooner it is taken, the better.” But it was an irony that party president Sonia Gandhi was not present on the dais when he spoke. But Prime Minister Manmohan Singh listened with rapt attention. Chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy too was available on the stage when Mr Prabhakar expressed his views.
Listing out the reasons for a separate Telangana, he said the area was terribly backward and that the Congress should stand shoulder to shoulder with the farmers of the region. He also called on the government to constitute a separate commission for the backward class on the lines of the minorities commission.
In a related development. The Mr Reddy, conceding that the MPs of the Telangana region met him, refused to divulge the contents of the talks. He said, “What we discussed is not for public consumption.”
Defending the arrest and hospitalisation of Opposition leader Chandrababu Naidu in Hyderabad, for resorting to a hungerstrike, the chief minister said, “The officials respects me and the Opposition leader equally. The government did not commit any mistake. I tried our level best to contact him over the phone. I spoke to his relatives. But he refused to come on line. Therefore, for health reasons, he had to be arrested and hospitalised.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
