Andhra cop gets Ashok Chakra
The nation’s highest peace-time gallantry award — Ashoka Chakra — has been awarded posthumously to K.L. Prasad Babu, a “reserve sub-inspector of Andhra Pradesh (police)” for leading an assault of the anti-Maoist force Greyhounds against the Maoists near the Andhra-Chhattisgarh border that was “instrumental in killing nine top-cadre Maoists”. The officer had attained martyrdom in the operation.
Incidentally, Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal N.A.K. Browne’s son Sq. Ldr. Omar Browne — a pilot with the IAF — has been awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (gallantry).
Meanwhile, three persons have been awarded the second-highest peace-time gallantry award — the Kirti Chakra — while 10 persons have been awarded the third-highest peace-time gallantry award — the Shaurya Chakra — as part of the Independence Day gallantry awards.
One of the Kirti Chakra awardees is naval officer Lt. Cdr. Abhilash Tomy who successfully completed a solo non-stop unassisted circumnavigation of the globe. This was done in an indigenously-built yacht named Mhadei.
