AMU prof ‘partner’ attempts suicide
The rickshaw-puller, involved in a gay relationship with AMU professor S.R. Siras, allegedly tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire on Saturday. Rickshaw-puller Irfan tried to commit suicide by immolating himself on Saturday morning, said city SP Man Singh Chauhan. He was rushed to a hospital where his condition is now stable. The SP said that Irfan was under “severe financial pressure” which probably forced him to take this drastic step.
The police denied that there was any pressure on the rickshaw-puller in the aftermath of the sting operation conducted by a TV channel that exposed his sexual relationship with the AMU professor.
His relatives however said that Irfan was under “tremendous depression” after the incident was exposed. It may be recalled that the AMU professor S.R. Siras, 62, had committed suicide earlier in April this year and his body was found in his private apartment outside the university. Siras, who hailed from Maharashtra and taught Marathi, was placed under suspension by AMU vice-chancellor P.K. Abdul Aziz on charges of homosexuality at his house inside the campus after a sting operation by a television channel which exposed him having sexual relations with a rickshaw-puller.
