All missing Cobalt-60 pencils recovered

New Delhi, May 5: Scientists have recovered all the missing Cobalt-60 pencils auctioned to a scrap dealer by Delhi University a month after a radiation leak led to the death of one person and injuries to eight others in Delhi’s Mayapuri area.

Barc’s emergency response team recovered four pencils intact, while others were found lying in pieces in the scrapyard. Some were even found outside Delhi.
“The search operation ended Tuesday night, and all 112 pieces have been recovered, and sent safely in sealed flasks to the Narora power plant,” an official said.
The cobalt pencil pieces were found hidden in the scrap amongst nuts and bolts, and the team had a tough time tracing them. The operation to identify and recover the Mayapuri scrap began April 7.
