All eyes on Jayalalithaa’s capital visit
Tamil Nadu Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa will be the cynosure of all political eyes, when she visits Delhi on Monday to take part in the chief ministers’ conference on internal security.
Ms Jayalalithaa’s visit, the third to the capital after she came to power in May last, has evoked considerable political interest as she might open consultations with leaders of various national parties in the prelude to the Presidential election.
Armed with 150 MLAs in the 234-member state assembly, she would be the centre of attraction. BJP leader Arun Jaitely had already met and sought her support for the party.
The AIADMK supremo, who had been fighting for states’ rights on a host of issues with the Centre, is expected to set the stage for an interaction with leaders of other like-minded political parties and work out a strategy to fight for states’ rights, though the agenda is confined to internal security. On Saturday, she had demanded that the Centre compensate states for the loss of revenue on account of reduction of the rate of CST.
After storming to power in May last, she paid her maiden visit to Delhi to call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in June. She visited the capital for the second time in July to attend the Planning commission meeting. Her present visit is in response to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s letter, requesting her to attend the meeting after conceding her demand for convening an exclusive meeting to discuss the NCTC for May 5.
