Alert to avoid sea-borne terror attacks
After a country-wide terror alert warning attacks at World Cup venues, the Navy, Coastguard and coastal villages have been alerted to prevent any “sea-borne” attack, said sources. The home ministry has specifically asked states to step up security arrangements at the World Cup venues and for the forthcoming Assembly elections in five
states. Security in refineries in Jamnagar, Mumbai, Mangalore and Kochi, sea ports of western coasts, particularly Mundra and Mumbai, have been intensified. The states have also been asked to track the whereabouts and monitor the activities of IM absconders as well their associates.
The foreign intelligence agency has told India that a group of six to 15 terrorists may have already sneaked into the country, possibly via Nepal, which another group is planning to use the sea-route. “A collateral input reveals that Al Qaeda operatives involved in the attacks could travel to India via boat, possibly in the next few months and that these operatives could be well acquainted with maritime travel to reach their targets in quick time and could be Urdu-speaking from the Punjab province of Pakistan,” the advisory sent by MHA to states said.
The inputs said that LeT group affiliated to Pakistan-based Zabiuddin Ansari researched information in October 2010, on nitro-explosive compounds and all the eight venues of the World Cup cricket matches in India where these chemicals can be used for fabrication of Improvised Explosive Devices. Household items which can be used as chemicals were also researched, the input said.
An extra layer of security will be deployed at all World Cup venues which will be manned by state police and IB personnel.
