Akhilesh gets hostile reception
UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav faced black flags and a hostile crowd when he visited the riot-hit areas of Muzaffarnagar on Sunday.
Villagers shouted slogans against the chief minister and the state government and accused the administration for failing to protect them. The villagers later told reporters that the chief minister met some “outsiders” and the local officials did not allow the villagers to submit their memorandum to him.
The chief minister on Sunday suspended Subhash Chandra Dubey, who was Muzaffarnagar SSP when the riots began, and said that if others were found guilty, they would also face action.
A departmental inquiry has been ordered against Mr Dubey, besides suspending him due to his failure in timely controlling communal incidents in Muzaffarnagar, said a home department release in Lucknow.
Mr Yadav on Sunday first visited Kanwal village, where trouble had begun after the triple murders on August 27, following a harassment incident.
“I met the families of the three youth killed on August 27. I met the families of Shahnawaz and Sachin and Gaurav and shared their grief,” the chief minister later told reporters.
He said that the state government would provide government jobs to those who have lost members of their families in the riots. “We will also rebuild homes that have been burnt down,” he said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to visit the riot-affected areas of Muzaffarnagar on Monday.
Meanwhile, the immediate fallout of the riots is that Mr Sompal Shastri, former Union minister and the Samajwadi candidate from Baghpat, has refused to contest the Lok Sabha elections saying that he had lost the moral right to do so.
