AICC reshuffle likely after UP polls
Talk of an AICC reshuffle has begun in party circles, suggesting that it could be done after the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Though a guessing game has begun about new faces to get important assignments, insiders say Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi may play a greater role in the organisation after reviving the Congress in Uttar Pradesh.
The young Gandhi has inculcated a fighting spirit in the UP Congress, they said. “We may or may not form a government in UP but we will certainly emerge as a key player after the polls,” party officials predicted.
This means Mr Gandhi cannot remain confined to the Youth Congress and the NSUI after the UP election.
A Youth Congress leader, who does not want to be quoted, said, “Rahulji believes in results , delivery and never encourages maintaining status quo.”
If the party insiders are to be believed, Mr Gandhi will have a say in the AICC revamp — which could be the party’s team for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Mr Gandhi announced Capt. Amrinder Singh as the Congress’ chief ministerial candidate in Punjab ahead of the state Assembly polls. This shows his increasing role and authority in the party.
The Congress members have stopped talking about applying the “one man one post” principle in the organisation after sensing that person holding dual posts will have to deliver and thus blame game tactics would not work. Currently only two Union ministers — Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mukul Wasnik — are handling dual positions.
They are AICC general secretaries dealing with sensative states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.
