Ahead of polls, 1 killed; Bloc leader assaulted
The poll violence continued unabated days before the first phase of the Panchayat elections as a Trinamul Congress supporter was allegedly murdered while former minister and Forward Bloc leader Mortaza Hossain was assaulted in North 24 Parganas.
At Chapra in Nadia, Trinamul activist Mithu Ghosh was standing outside his home early on Tuesday when CPI(M) activists hurled bombs at him. He was killed as one of the bombs exploded. Eight CPI(M) workers have been arrested for questioning.
Meanwhile, former minister Mortaza Hossain was allegedly attacked and beaten up by Trinamul supporters at Barasat. The Forward Bloc alleged that Trinamul members injured three party-men in an attack on the ex-minister’s car during an election campaign. “Bikers holding Trinamul flags assaulted our workers accompanying Mr Hossain and severely beaten them up,” a Bloc supporter claimed.
Bloc leader Swapan Basu and Hemanta Das were also thrashed. They were admitted to Barasat sub-divisional hospital and an FIR was lodged with the police.
At Bankra in Howrah, a CPI(M) party office was vandalised by a group of Trinamul activists while at Nandigram in East Midnapore Trinamul activists attacked on a Congress rally. In both cases, the Trinamul denied the allegations. In Jalpaiguri, a female CPI(M) candidate was assaulted by ruling party members. Similarly, Trinamul supporters attacked another women candidate at Asansol in Burdwan.
