Agency to build roads in Naxal areas?
The government is planning to set up another agency on the lines of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) which will, along with private companies, build roads in Naxal-affected areas.
However, top government sources on Friday said they were dismayed that very few private companies were coming forward to participate.
The government-led venture to build roads in naxal areas is being viewed in government circles as a “high risk but high profit” venture for those private companies that participate.
The government had wanted the BRO — that functions under the purview of the defence ministry — to concentrate on building roads in border areas, especially in areas close to the Sino-Indian border. That’s why the government is now planning to set up another body for building roads in Naxal-affected areas.
Meanwhile, the government has despatched a list of retired major-generals —— to a few Naxal-affected states — who could be part of the Unified Commands set up in these states to combat naxalism.
When asked about any delays in the process, sources said some of the states were yet to decide on the appointment of persons from among the panel of names sent.
States such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal are among the states severely affected by Naxal violence.
