After UP, Aarakshan banned in Punjab, AP
A day after Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh decided to ban Prakash Jha’s film Aarakshan on the eve of its nationwide release due to certain controversial scenes in it, which the director has agreed to delete.
The film has been under fire from political parties that have been accusing it of portraying minority communities in a bad light. Similar demands for a ban were also made in Bihar and Maharashtra.
Security outside the residences of actors Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and director Prakash Jha were beefed up Thursday. “Apart from the residences of actors Amitabh Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan, policemen have also been deployed around the office and residence of director Prakash Jha in Oshiwara,” said Mumbai deputy commissioner of police Pratap Dighavkar.
Punjab decided to ban the film after the state government got intelligence reports that certain scenes in Aarakhshan might inflame passions amongst certain communities. The Andhra Pradesh government, in its order, said the film could hurt the sentiments of the weaker sections.
Uttar Pradesh’s Mayawati government banned the film Wednesday for two months saying it could create law and order problems. Demands were also made for a ban in Bihar and Maharashtra.
