Advani counters Shakeel’s view on IM
BJP parliamentary party chief L.K. Advani on Tuesday appeared to counter Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed’s view that Indian Mujahideen was formed as a reaction to the 2002 Gujarat riots by citing a book which states that US President Barack Obama now believes jihadi terrorists are not poor, hopeless or ignorant but ones having political and religious grievances.
The BJP had attacked the Congress and Mr Ahmed for their attempt to “communalise” the issue of national security for electoral gain.
In his latest blog posting, Mr Advani quoted extensively from a book, which has claimed that Mr Obama’s attitude towards jihadi terrorism changed radically in the first decade of this century — from the day when 9/11 took place to the time when Osama bin Laden was shot dead.
According to the book, Mr Obama had different views about the root cause of terrorism. However, 10 years later, when Osama was killed in 2012, his views about jihadi terrorism had changed.
“By the time that day ended (when Osama was killed) I am sure a realisation must have taken roots in his mind, as the author of this book writes that in this case, the suicidal killers will turn out to be neither embittered sons of poverty, nor especially hopeless or ignorant,” the senior BJP leader said.
Mr Advani, made these comments after Mr Ahmed remarks that IM, a proscribed terrorist organisation, was born as a reaction to the 2002 Gujarat riots.
