Achuthanandan plans to visit Kudankulam protestors
Human rights activist and member of Team Anna core team Prashanth Bhushan on Saturday called on Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan and sought his support for the people’s movement against Koodankulam nuclear plant.
During his meeting with Mr Achuthanandan, Mr Bhushan impressed upon the CPI(M) leader the need for supporting the anti-Koodankulam agitation. “Mr Achuthanandan gave a patient hearing and promised to visit the protesters soon,’’ Mr Bhushan told Deccan Chronicle.
The Supreme Court lawyer who later visited Koodankulam met the officials of the district administration and urged them not to use repressive measures against the peaceful protesters.
He said the union Government and the administration were making all kinds of allegations against the protesters and harassing them.
On the corruption in defence deals, Mr Bhushan said that the defence
minister should have registered an FIR immediately after the matter was brought to his notice by the Army Chief.
The FIR was lodged only after the Army Chief made a public statement.
Mr Bhushan said instead of entrusting the probe with the CBI, the government should get the matter probed by an independent agency.
“The CBI is directly under the control of the government. Hence we cannot expect a free and fair probe,’’ added Mr Bhushan.
