900 apply for SP tickets for LS polls

The Samajwadi Party has so far received 900 applications for 80 Lok Sabha seats and there are, apparently, no non-serious candidates because each application is accompanied with a bank draft of Rs 10,000.
The maximum number of applicants is from Ambedkar Nagar where 35 aspirants have applied for a Lok Sabha ticket from the Samajwadi Party. Ambedkar Nagar, incidentally, is considered to be a stronghold of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
Surprisingly, there are no applicants from Samajwadi bastions like Mainpuri, Kannauj, Badaun, Hardoi, Rampur and Allahabad.
“This could be because everyone knows that the local MPs who are among the party’s top leadership will re-contest from the seats and there is no place for a new entrant in these constituencies,” said a party functionary.
It may be recalled that last month, the Samajwadi Party had invited applications for the Lok Sabha elections from all the 80 constituencies and in order to weed out non-serious applicants, the party had made it mandatory for every application to be accompanied by a bank draft of Rs 10,000 each. Though the deadline for applications was May 31, but seeing the requests, the deadline was later extended to June 10.
According to party sources, all the applicants will soon be called in for interviews where a panel of top SP leaders will be present.
“The idea behind the interview is to see if the candidate is well aware of the party’s ideology and culture and also whether he has the capability of carrying along party workers in his constituency,” said a SP leader. The Samajwadi Party plans to finalise candidates on all 80 Lok Sabha seats by October so that the candidates can start working in their constituencies.
The party apprehends that Lok Sabha elections could be held anytime in mid-2013 and does not wish to be caught unawares.
The party also wants all Lok Sabha candidates to study their constituencies and its problems so that these can be dealt with by the government before the polls are held.
“Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav wants the party and the government to work in tandem so that we can sweep the Lok Sabha elections and play a key role in the next government at Centre,” said a party leader.
