8 cockfight gamblers arrested
Coimbatore: Eight persons have been arrested in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts over the last few days for gambling over cockfights, the police said.
While holding cockfights is a common practice in many parts of western Tamil Nadu, gambling over cockfights is especially prevalent during the Pongal season when local youth bet on their favourite cocks.
On a tip-off, the police arrested four persons from in and around Coimbatore for gambling during cockfights. The arrested include Manohar (28) and Mohanraj (30) from Udayapalayam, and Senthil Kumar (26) and Kumar (26) from Sowripalayam.
According to the Singanallur police, a patrol team on Tuesday evening found a group of four persons involved in a cockfight game with fixing money near G.V. Residency, Masakalipalayam. The police arrested them and seized two fighter cocks besides Rs200 cash from them.
In another incident in Tirupur district, four persons – Mariappan (75), Sakthivel (33), Shiva (24) and Suburamani (26) - were arrested from Avinasi. According to the Avinasi police, a team, led by inspector Pounraj, found four persons involved in a cockfight gamble at Ukayanur Senthurar Thottam near Avinasi. The police arrested the men and seized three mobile phones, motorcycles and Rs 1,300 cash from them.
All the arrested have been remanded in judicial custody.
