72% above average rainfall
Thiruvanathapuram: The Meteorological Centre here has estimated that the total rainfall of the state during the South-West monsoon from June 1till date as being 72 percent above average. The rains are expected to continue in the coming days also.
The normal rainfall for the State is 385.9 mm. However, for the period from June 1 to June 19, the state received a rainfall of 664.7 mm. As per the forecast, rain and thunder showers are likely to occur at isolated places in Kerala and Lakshadweep during the next 48 hours from Friday with the sky remaining generally cloudy. There are also no chances of any significant changes in the subsequent two days also.
The weather office also cautioned that strong winds from the westerly direction, having a speed occasionally reaching 45 to 55 kilometre per hour, are likely along the Kerala coast and over Lakshadweep during the next 24 hours.
Kannur District received a rainfall of 1025.5 mm as against a normal of 479.4 mm. This was 114 percent above the average rainfall. Iddukki district which has some of the major hydel electrical projects in the state received a rainfall of 715.7 mm as against a normal of 370 mm. This was 93 percent above the average rainfall.
