7 killed, many hurt in poll violence
Seven persons were killed and several others sustained serious injuries in the violence marred fourth phase panchayat elections, that recorded the highest poll related deaths on Monday. Reports of deaths were received from each district of Murshidabad, Malda, Birbhum and Nadia which went to polls on Monday.
Two CPI(M) activists were killed in bomb explosion in Mayureswar in Birbhum, while another was grievously injured in the same explosion.
The mutilated bodies of Asim Bagdi and Jamir Sheikh were recovered from a paddy field.
Two CPI(M) supporter were killed in an explosion while making crude bombs in Raninagar of Murshidabad. The relatives of deceased Suhel Sheikh and Muklesur Rahaman allegedly did not allow the bodies to be removed by the police for sometime.
In Beldanga of Murshidabad, a woman voter was killed when ‘armed CPI(M) miscreants’ hurled bombs outside a booth where she had gone to cast her vote. Nur Jahan Bibi, 32, was reportedly leaving the booth when she met with the terrible fate.
In Ratua of Malda, a CRPF jawan allegedly shot dead a voter outside a polling booth. 55-year-old Abdul Mannan, who was known as a Congress supporter, was trying to allegedly intimidate the voters with his accomplices. It was also reported that four jawans sustained injuries in the clash. A CPI(M) supporter was killed when Trinamul Congress workers launched an attack in Mayapur in Nadia. Khabiruddin Sheikh was killed in a bomb explosion. However, denying such allegations, local Trinamul Congress said that Sheikh died while making bombs. The husband of a CPI(M) candidate was shot in Jalangi of Murshidabad and was admitted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. He is reportedly in a critical condition and undergoing treatment.
