6 of single family die as Delhi house falls
Six members of a family were killed when a four-storey building partially damaged by heavy downpours on Monday collapsed early on Wednesday in northwest Delhi’s Usmanpur area.
The incident took place at around 3 am in Brahmpuri’s I Block area. The deceased have been identified as Hashmi Begum, 61, her three sons — Mohammad Nafees (27), Mohammad Nadeem (25) and Mohammad Azeem (23) — and her two daughters-in-law Shagufta (25) and Ayesha (24). The lone survivor from the family is 22-year-old Rubina, wife of Azeem, who was admitted to hospital with minor injuries.
The police said the family was planning to shift out of the residence as wide cracks had appeared on the front of the building due to heavy rains on Monday. “The building had developed cracks after the rains lashed the city on Monday evening,” DCP (northeast) S.S. Yadav said.
The police was alerted at around 4 am when a neighbour saw the building in ruins and called a PCR. The police said it took more than three hours for fire department and MCD personnel to clear the debris.
