5 states to roll out ‘ambitious scheme’ in Aug.
A day after UPA chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi deliberated with chief ministers of the Congress-ruled states over the implementation of the food security law, five such states are on the way to roll out the ambitious scheme in August. Along with Delhi and Haryana, which are set to roll out the schemes on August 20, Karnataka, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh have joined the race to launch the ambitious programme next month.
The states are eagerly awaiting the revised poverty data for 2011-12 of the National Sample Survey to launch the food security law.
“The government is hopeful that the scheme will be launched in all the Congress-ruled states in a couple of months, while five of them will do so in August,” said a senior official of the ministry of food and consumer affairs.
Under the food security law, the states have been given the power to identify the beneficiaries based on the guidelines to be decided by the Planning Commission and the ministry of rural development. While the ongoing Socio-Economic and Caste Census is still a work in progress, the government for the time being is looking ahead at the revised data of the NSS on poverty.
