5 run over by sp’s car: 3 die, 2 injured
Three persons, including a youth and his mother, were killed and two injured in West Midnapore district when came under the wheels of the car of the superintendent of police of the neighbouring Purulia district.
West Midnapore district magistrate Surendra Gupta said the incident occurred at Raskundu More in Garbeta when Purulia superintendent of police Sudhakaran was on his way to Kalaikunda to attend a programme there.
Five persons, all residents of Nalpa village under Garbeta police station, were waiting at a bus stand when the superintendent of police’s car ran them over while trying to avoid a collision with a motorbike rushing towards it.
A youth, Aloke Mondal (30), died on the spot while the SP took the other injured to Midnapore hospital in that car itself, Gupta said.
Aloke’s mother Arati Mondal (56) and another woman Alima Khatun (40) succumbed to their injuries in the hospital while the other two were released after first aid.
The DM said as the SP himself had arranged everything, there was no resentment against him in the area.
The driver of the superintendent of police’s car was arrested and a case filed against him following the accident, police sources said.
The car was also seized and presently under the custody of the Garbeta police.
The Purulia SP later left in another car, the sources said.
