5 die as goods trains collide in Orissa
At least five people, including two locomotive pilots, were feared killed after two goods trains collided head-on in Orissa’s Keonjhar district on early Wednesday.
Body of one victim was recovered while rescue teams were trying to retrieve the four other bodies from the mangled engines.
“We suspect five been killed in the mishap. The rescue team has so far recovered one dead body. Efforts are on get out others from the mangled engines,” Sanjay Garg, Divisional Manager, East Coast Railway, Khurda.
According to official sources, the mishap took place at Tigiri-pali village between Keonjhar and Banspani when an iron ore-laden freight train was proceeding from Nayagarh to Waltier and an empty goods train was coming from the opposite direction.
“The trains had five staff on board. While one body has been recovered, body parts of another person have been found,” the policesaid. The divisional manager said investigation was on to find out the reason how the two trains were allowed to travel on a single-line track.
