4 militants killed in J&K gunfight

The Army said Thursday it killed four militants in a fierce gunfight in Handwara area close to the LoC in J&K’s Kupwara district. The incident took place days after four infiltrators were killed by troops in neighbouring Machael area.

A defence spokesperson said in a four-day counter-infiltration operation launched by the Army along the de facto border following intelligence reports that groups of militants have sneaked into J&K from PoK through the area taking advantage of woods spread in vast areas of Hafrada, Shamswari, Badnimal, Hagnikoot, Baliyan Behak, Waderballa and Rajwar of Kupwara. “The four heavily-armed militants had sneaked in own area a couple of days ago and were engaged in a gunfight by our jawans in Hafruda forest area in the operation launched Monday,” he said.
