4 killed in fresh Assam violence, toll up to 11
Law and order in trouble-torn Kokrajhar district took an ugly turn on Saturday when rampaging armed miscreants gunned down four Bengali-speaking Muslims following the arrest of an executive member of Bodoland Peoples Front with two AK-47 rifles and 60 rounds of live ammunition.
The home secretary Gyanendra Tripathy told this newspaper that the police on Saturday arrested executive member Monokumar Brahma, alias Jalja, and recovered two AK-47 rifles and 60 live rounds from his house in Kokrajhar. Brahma, who was the commander of the disbanded Bodoland Liberation Tigers, was also the president of the Bodoland Peoples Front youth wing, which is also under the scanner of the security agencies.
Soon after the killing of four villagers, the police decided to withdraw the house guards and escort vehicles of all the executive members of the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District exc-ept three senior BPF leaders. Sources said there were reports that some youth were moving about with illegal AK-47 rifles as PSOs to BPF leaders.

Cong dismisses no-confidence motion by mamata

The Congress on Saturday made light of the Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s move to bring in a no confidence motion against the UPA government. The Congress, while wondering from where Ms Banerjee would get the support of requisite 50 MPs, stated that the party is ready for the floor test.
“We have majority in the Lok Sabha and the Congress is ready for floor test,” said Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi.
Mr Alvi was reacting to the statement of Ms Banerjee that her party would bring a no-confidence motion against the UPA government on the first day of the winter session.
The Trinamul Congress had earlier withdrawn support from the UPA, after the government ruled to allow FDI in multi-brand retail and hiked the diesel prices along with capping the subsidised LPG cylinders at six per household a year.
The Congress also stated that the Trinamul Congress would not have the numerical strength to move a no confidence motion unless the party takes support of the communal forces.
“Every party is within its right to bring any motion under Parliamentary rules. If the TMC wants to bring in a trust motion, we have nothing to say,” Rashid Alvi said on Saturday.
Mr Alvi further noted that Ms Banerjee would need support of at least 50 MPs. The TMC holds 19 seats in the Lok Sabha, which includes Kabir Suman, who is a dissident within the party.
