3 districts in today’s Phase 2
Three districts of Burdwan, Hooghly and East Midnapore will go to the polls in the second phase of the five-phase panchayat elections on Monday, amidst increasing poll violence in the state which claimed another life.
The state election commission (SEC) on Sunday informed that the second phase poll is taking place at 12,514 booths in three districts with 96,25,320 electorates to cast their votes.
In the three districts, there are 10,637 gram panchayat (GP) seats with 21,795 candidates contesting for the seats; 2,047 panchayat samiti (PS) seats with 4,749 candidates contesting and 185 zila parishad (ZP) seats with 804 candidates contesting for the seats.
The number of candidates who won uncontested is 2,393 in GPs, 400 in PSs and 6 in ZPs. But the SEC said that polling will not be held in 362 booths in Hooghly where all the seats have been won uncontested by Trinamul congress candidates.
On bike rallies, SEC said it has received such reports from Panskura in East Midnapore, Domkal in Murshidabad and from Haripal in Hooghly. SEC commissioner Mira Pande said, “We have received a few complaints on bike rallies.”

According to the SEC, 15,000 Central and 35,000 state police force has been deployed in the three districts where the forces have began route march.
SEC secretary Tapas Ray said that polling agents and officers have almost reached every polling premise.
However, a bus carrying the agents and officers fell into a canal leaving four officers, two policemen and two volunteers injured, Mr Ray added.
Meanwhile, a CPI(M) worker was killed while another injured on Saturday night when Congress workers allegedly hurled bombs at CPI(M) workers at Kushaberia village in Domkal in Murshidabad. CPI(M) worker Naushad Mondal, 32, died on the spot while Minarul Sheikh received serious injuries.
According to sources, the police arrested six people in connection with the murder. In Burdwan six CPI(M) workers were arrested when a clash between the ruling party and the Left Front broke out at Andal leaving a Trinamul Congress activist grievously injured.
Trinamul activist Ratan Chakrabarty with injuries in his throat was taken to hospital. The arrested were produced in Durgapur court which remanded them in eight days’ police custody.
