3 die in Bengal poll violence
Three people were killed and several others injured as violence erupted in the second phase of the panchayat elections in West Bengal. Significantly, all three deaths were reported from the district of Burdwan which, along with Hooghly and West Midnapore, went to polls on Monday.
The husband of CPI(M) candidate Manowara Bibi was killed in a bomb attack, allegedly by Trinamul supporters, outside a booth at Jamuria. Sheikh Hashmat was on his way to cast his vote in Madhudanga primary school when he was attacked by Trinamul Congress workers who came on motorcycles and threw bombs. Hashmat was killed but his associates chased the assailants and one Trinamul Congress worker was caught and beaten to death.
Blaming the CPI(M) for both the killings in Jamuria, state agriculture minister Moloy Ghatak said, “Hashmat was trying to jam the booth with his accomplices. This enraged the villagers who beat him up. The CPI(M) cadres in retaliation lynched Khora.”
Rejecting his claim, the CPI(M) said that Trinamul Congress goons attacked Hashmat when he refused to obey their “do not vote” diktat.
