2G scam: Raja could be arrested soon
With the 2G spectrum scam refusing to die down, the controversial former telecom minister A. Raja could be in for trouble. Sources in the government as also the DMK-led front in Tamil Nadu revealed that Raja could be behind bars in the next few days.
Action could be taken on the basis of a report of the Justice Shivraj Patil committee on the 2G spectrum scam. And if it is taken before the budget session of Parliament beginning on February 21, it could make the corruption issue redundant, they feel.
A Union minister on Tuesday said he too “heard” about action(arrest) against Raja in the coming days.
The current mood in the UPA is not to defend Raja. In fact, the Congress and the DMK have been distancing themselves from the former telecom minister conceding that he has become a liability for them ahead of the crucial electoral battle in the state.
According to sources, corruption and dynasty are going to be the major issues besides the incumbency in the coming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. A prompt action against Raja by the investigating agency ,could weaken the Opposition campaign against the Congress and the DMK, they said.
Raja, who was grilled by the CBI for a third time the other day, got a long rope in this alleged scam. The issue has not only consolidated the Opposition but had even washed out the entire Winter Session of Parliament. And a delay in action could put the DMK and the Congress on the defensive in both — Parliament and Tamil Nadu election campaign, feared the UPA insiders.
The BJP and the Marxists have so far remained firm on their demand of JPC probe into the spectrum scam.
But an action against Raja could split the Opposition unity.
