2G scam: JPC summons CAG
In a bid to ascertain as to how CAG report has quantified a total loss of `1.76 lakh crores to public exchequer on account of spectrum allocation, the joint parliamentary committee, headed by Congress MP P.C. Chacko, has invited Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai to brief the panel on Monday.
In its report tabled in the Parliament last year, the CAG had pegged presumptive loss to the exchequer on 2G spectrum allocation at `1.76 lakh crores. This led to a huge political furore in the country and subsequently the then telecom minister A. Raja had to resign.
Informing about the decision to call the CAG, Mr Chacko said, “Today, the talk is of a `1.76 lakh scam. We want to know from the horse’s mouth how he had arrived at the figure.”
Telecom minister Kapil Sibal had dubbed “utterly erroneous and without any basis” the estimated loss on account of 2G allocation. However, according to the CBI chargesheet in the 2G spectrum allocation case, the loss to the exchequer is pegged at `30,984 crores.
The JPC has also decided to call CBI director A.P. Singh to brief on the 2G case at its meeting on June 7, while the finance secretary, chief of Enforcement Directorate and Telecom Regulatory Authority chairman J.S. Sarma will make presentations on the issue.
