17 killed in Maha road accident
Seventeen people were killed and nine others injured when an overcrowded jeep collided with a milk-tanker in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district on Friday, the police said.
The incident occurred when the jeep carrying 27 passengers collided head on with the tanker near Navegaon village in Bhandara, they said.
Following the collision, the jeep overturned leading to death of 14 passengers on the spot. Three others succumbed to injuries during treatment at a local hospital. Nine passengers sustained serious injuries, the police said.
Bodies of the deceased have been taken to the rural hospital in Tiroda tehsil.

Naxals torch five trucks, hijack bus

In a late night strike, suspected Maoist guerrillas on Thursday torched five iron ore-laden trucks and hijacked a bus after emptying the passengers at Nerly under Kirandul block in Chhattisgarh’s restive Dantewada district, the police said on Friday.
The incident occurred at around 11.45 pm.
The police said over a dozen heavily armed rebels intercepted the trucks, which were carrying iron ore from Bailadila mines of National Mineral Development Corporation, in a densely forested area at Nerly and set them on fire, after forcing the drivers to step out.

Pick-pocket gang busted at Raje rally

The Jhalawar police busted a gang of pick-pocketeers during former chief minister Vasundhra Raje’s road show in the area. The police has recovered Rs 25,000 from the thieves. According to the police, clad in white kurtas and trousers, the gang members visit political rallies and steal money. ‘’They emerge with garlands and bunch of flowers and mingle with the crowd and do their work,” says SHO Bhawanimandi police station, Gopichand Meena.
“The gang works under Mukesh Jat of Jaipur and has more than two dozen members,” said Mr Meena.

SC to hear Polavaram case Oct. 4

The Supreme Court on Friday decided not to hear the plea filed by Orissa government over the controversial Polavaram project separately and re-notified the case for October 4 for being heard with other cases relating to the same project.
Orissa government had moved the Supreme Court seeking quashing of clearance granted by the environment ministry to controversial Polavaram project in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. The Supreme Court division bench comprising Justice Mukundakam Sharma and Justice A.R. Dave was hearing the matter over multipurpose Polavaram dam.
