12 killed in MP stampede, probe ordered
Twelve people, including two women, were killed in a stampede at Hussain Tekri, falling under the Jawra Industrial Area police station of Ratlam district in western Madhya Pradesh, early on Saturday morning.
According to information received here, there was a huge congregation of those who observe Chehallum, 40 days after Muharram at the Hussain Tekri shrine on the intervening night of January 13 and 14.
There was stampede shortly after 1 am as people’s movement was restricted by the single entry point that had been provided for thousands of those clamouring to walk on the firebed.
State chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has expressed grief and ordered an inquiry into this incident. He has also announced a compensation of `1 lakh to the next of kin of those killed.
Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Ajay Singh has also expressed sorrow and demanded strict action against those responsible for this incident. He has questioned the role of the district collector and said that this tragedy occurred due to extreme callousness of the administration.
